이번 주 NSW주(state)에서는 어떤 이유로든 출생시 낙태를 허용하는 민간 차원의 법안이 곧 의회에 도입될 것이라고 발표하였습니다.

이 법안은 아직 일반에 공개되지 않았고, 법안에 대한 공개적인 공청회도 없었으며, 뉴 사우스 웨일즈 주민들의 견해를 국회의원들에 알리고, 주 각료에서 논의할 수 있는 기회조차 없었습니다.

주지사 Gladys Berejiklian, 보건장관 Brad Hazzard와 이 법안의 설계자들은 이 법안을 가능한 소규모의 토론을 거쳐 수일 안에 통과시킬 것으로 보여지며, 그렇게 될 수 있도록 이미 충분한 정보를 가지고 투표하는 사람들을 통해 법안을 통과시킬 것입니다.

이 법안은 나쁜 것입니다. 두명의 의사가 동의하면 낙태가 허용됩니다. 법안은 낙태를 하려거나 누군가에게 환자를 위임할 때, 가톨릭(및 다른)의 의사와 병원이 협력하도록 합니다. 이는 가톨릭 신자들이 갖는 권리에 대한 또 다른 공격입니다.

최악의 경우, 이 법안은 '다른 선택권이 없다'고 느끼는 임산부들에게는 좌절감만 줄 뿐, 어떠한 대안도 되지 않습니다. 이는 낙태산업이 꿈꾸는 법안이며, 낙태산업은 이미 다른 여러 주(states)를 압박했습니다. 그럼에도 태어나지 않은 아이들과 돌봄을 받지 못하는 임산부는 더욱 위험에 처하게 되었습니다.

주지사와 주변인들은 우리의 대화요청을 중단하도록 결정했습니다. 저는 사제들과 신자들에게 지역의 의회의원들에게 연락을 취해, 그들에게 주어진 제한된 시간 안에서라도 주민들의 목소리를 들으라고 요청했습니다.

시드니 성공회 글렌 데이비스 대주교, 신임 호주 그리스 정교회 대교구 마카리오 대주교, 호주 동방 가톨릭 주교회의 의장 앙투안-샤벨 타라베이(Antoine-Charbel Tarabay) 대주교와 함께, 저는 주지사에게 적절한 협의가 될 수 있도록, 주지사가 긴급히 개입하여 대화에 필요한 더 많은 시간을 허용해 줄 것을 요청했습니다. 저는 주지사의 회신을 기다립니다.

This week it was announced that a private members bill would be introduced immediately into parliament that will allow abortion for any reason up until birth in NSW.

The bill has yet to be released to the public and as such there has been no public inquiry into the subject, no opportunity for residents of NSW to make their views known to their MPs and not even discussion in state Cabinet.

It seems that Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Health Minister Brad Hazzard and the architects of this bill are determined for it to pass within days with as little community discussion as possible, let alone providing those being asked to vote on it with enough information to do so in an informed manner.

The bill is a bad one. It will allow abortion right up to birth if two doctors agree. It will require Catholic (and other) doctors and hospitals to collaborate by either taking part in the abortion or referring patients to someone who will. It is yet another attack upon the rights of people of faith.

Worst of all, it does absolutely nothing to provide alternatives for women distressed about being pregnant who often feel they have ‘no other option’. It is the dream bill of the abortion industry, which they have already pressed upon other several states; but it will leave unborn children and unsupported pregnant women even more at risk.

The Premier and others seem determined to stop us having our say. I have asked our priests and people to contact their local MPs to make their voice heard in the little time that they have been given to do so.

Along with the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Dr Glenn Davies, the new Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, Archbishop Makarios and co-ordinator of Australia’s Eastern Catholic Bishops, Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay, I have written to the Premier seeking her urgent intervention to allow more time so a proper consultation can happen. I look forward to her response.
