Days of Fasting and Reparation
The forty days of Lent are upon us earlier this year!
We have returned from our holidays of January. The return to work, school and the normal routine activities of our year are quickly occupying our time and energies.
Yet, the annual Lenten penitential journey we now make towards Easter is here!
In the midst of this sudden change of pace in our lives, let us try our best to enter into the grace Lent offers us all.
Our ancient yet ever new Christian Tradition offers us during Lent the enduring disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These prepare us to celebrate worthily the central tenet of our faith – the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, Our Lord and Saviour. In the Risen Jesus darkness and despair have been forever defeated by light and hope.
Last December 2017 the Australian Youth Festival in Sydney proved a stunning moment of light and hope of the Holy Spirit for the thousands of youth gathered. Our own diocese was well represented. It officially launched the YEAR OF YOUTH for 2018.
Yet, incredibly at the same time, the Final Report of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, was published. It has showcased moments of great darkness and despair not simply in courageous victims but also their family and friends and all of us.
This tragedy of sexual abuse ought become a particular prayer focus of our Lenten discipline this year.
The Bishops of Australia have requested that the four days from Ash Wednesday (14th Feb till 17th Feb) be dedicated in a special way to fasting and reparation in sorrow for child abuse and for the healing of victims.
I am confident that parishes and communities will be able to respond appropriately to this request. Liturgical resources are readily available to assist.
My prayer is that our spiritual journey of Lent to the Easter Mysteries assist us to shift our focus afresh onto Jesus, our hope and lasting peace.

단식과 보속의 날
올해 이른시기 우리에게 40일간의 사순시기가 도래했습니다.
우리는 1월 휴가로부터 돌아왔습니다. 일터로, 학교로, 일상으로의 복귀는 우리의 시간과 에너지를 빠르게 소진시킵니다. 그러나 매년 이뤄지는 사순시기 회개의 여정은, 우리가 부활을 향해 나아가도록 이끌어줍니다. 우리 모두 삶의 갑작스런 변화의 국면에서, 주어진 은총의 사순시기에 들어가도록 최선을 다합시다.
오래된 그러나 새로운 그리스도교 전통은 우리에게 사순시기 동안 단식과 자선, 정해진 기도 바치는 일을 인내로이 행할 것을 권고합니다. 이러한 준비는 우리 믿음의 중심이 되는 교리-구원자 주님, 죽음으로부터 부활하신 예수님-를 합당하게 거행하도록 합니다. 부활하신 예수님은 영원한 빛과 희망으로 어둠과 절망을 물리쳤습니다.
지난 2017년 12월 시드니에서 있었던 호주 가톨릭 청년대회는, 놀라운 성령의 빛과 희망의 모습을 그곳에 모인 수천명의 젊은이들에게 보여주었습니다. 우리 대교구도 잘 표현되었습니다. 공식적으로 2018년 ‘젊은이를 위한 해’가 시작되었습니다.
그러나 놀랍게도 동시에, 왕립 위원회는 어린이 성학대에 관한 제도적 대응이라는 최종 보고서를 출판하였습니다. 이는 단순히 용기있는 희생자가 아니라 가족과 친구들 그리고 우리 모두에게 큰 어둠과 절망의 순간을 보여주었습니다.
성추행의 비극은 올해 사순시기 특별 기도 지향의 주제가 되어야 합니다.
호주 주교회의는 재의 수요일부터 4일간(2월 14일부터 2월 17일)을 단식과 자선이라는 특별한 방법을 통해 어린이 추행, 희생자들의 치유를 위해 전념하도록 요청했습니다. 나는 여러 본당들과 공동체들에서 이러한 요청에 적절한 응답을 해줄 것이라고 확신합니다. 전례 자료들은 즉각적인 도움이 될 것입니다.
저의 기도는 부활의 신비에 대한 사순시기 영적 여정안에서 우리의 관심이 영원한 희망과 평화이신 예수님께로 새롭게 나아가도록 돕는 것입니다.
